The Duke Career Center is an innovative, student-centered department of dedicated professionals and trained student advisors (the CATs) . We assist students with making decisions about how to best use their education, talents, interests and goals; we help them through the job search process; and we facilitate access to employers and alumni for internships, jobs, and advice. At Duke, a top-quality education and preparation for a life of making a difference after college are complementary goals.


Top Ten Things All Duke Students Should Know about Careers:

  1. When you matriculate at Duke, you're not expected to know your career direction .
  2. Major doesn't equal career, and more majors don't equal better careers.
  3. Define success after graduation for yourself: it's your life.
  4. Advisors, faculty, and staff can be your allies; build relationships with them.
  5. Careers don't happen overnight.   Partner with the Career Center from your first year on.
  6. Graduate or professional school are great options if they're necessary for what you truly want to do.
  7. Getting out of your comfort zone and exploring new avenues is essential .
  8. If you choose to study abroad, choose an international immersive experience for the maximum career boost.
  9. Get actively involved in both academic and extra curricular life at Duke to gain skills employers are seeking.
  10. GPA may be less important than what you can prove you've accomplished.
